The Melo City

FINALLY is all I have to say after 5 months of rumors and speculation. Carmelo Anthony is finally a New York Knick. Heres the trade break down

Knicks get: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Sheldon Williams, Anthony Carter, former Knick himself, Renaldo Balkman and Corey Brewer

Nuggets get: Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, 2014 first round pick, two 2nd round picks and 3 million in cash.

Timberwolves get: Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph.

New York rejoice. Once again New York Basketball is relevant...not that ever wasn't.

Editors Letter: XXL Freshman 11

What's Good?
I know what you are saying right now.... "What the hell is XXL thinking?" Yes! Me too. Since I was a youngin' I believe there were only few magazines that celebrated hip-hop to it's capacity and XXL was surely one of them.  I do not agree with majority of the starring cast on this cover. How are they selecting artist? What are the qualifications?  For as long as I been writing for November's Child everyone who follows us (Thank You) knows I'm no hater. The very first thought that came to mind when I  seen the cover was that there must be some type of payola for press or that labels are simply paying magazines with notoriety for features. Lil B, are you fucking kidding? last time I recall it said "Freshman of Hip-Hop". Alot of supporters of his music say its "entertaining" but the question I pose is, is it Rap/hip-hop?
Lil Twist is so irrelevant beyond measure. He is a 19 year old rapper who is marketed to 10 year old kids, who still don't know him. I understand he has one of the biggest engines behind him but what work has he done that has set him to a standard of promising. Meek Milli has had no soundwave success until his signing to Maybach Music Group which was less than a month ago which means you can make it as a XXL freshman in 3 weeks before press. I am not going to get into the careers of the rest of them but the only guys I endorse on this cover is... Kendrick Lamar, Big K.R.I.T., Yelawolf, Diggy, Mac Miller and a drop of Freddy. The rest in my predictions have to pull their weight up. On a side note Stalley definitely deserved a spot before most of those guys.

Check It Out: GaGa for SUREME

What's Good?
Lady Gaga gets REALLY comfortable with Terry Richardson for Supreme's latest shoot. I don't think they can ad any of the photos to an ad campaign.

New Artist Alert: Nike Nando

What's Good?
Usually when an artist puts on for a certain place in the world another artist finds their way through. Washington D.C. was one of the most overlooked places for hip-hop talent and since the national recognition of Maybach Music's newly signed artist Wale, many artist have tried to monopolize on the opportunity to be seen while the spotlight is on the DMV. We have payed close attention to most of their note worthy MC's such as Philade, Gram, Justi,Tabbi Bonney and many more....but, today's most promising artist since their recognition has to be...Nike Nando.
The DMV artist may have been out for some time and surely paid his dues. Nando's talent has surely made its way to New York City and some of today's most popular blogs. Now with his 'Love Day' project hitting the internet sound waves Nike Nando surely has the potential to bring his hip-hop experience to new fans everywhere. I (@Lucky_Peters) surely co-sign this guy for a solid listen.

The Speech

In every moment of sports there is that defining moment, that speech that a coach or player may bring to their team to get them ready to finish a game for the ages.

Yesterday afternoon one of those moments came about as Coach Steve Lavin huddled his team in during a time out and spoke the words that brought the motivation to defeat (THEN) #4 Pittsburgh.

"Life will never get any better than this moment," the coach told them. "This is Madison Square Garden, you have this place electrified, you're playing with your best friends, and we're playing the No. 4 team in the country."

Though it might not have been a speech that won a championship game it separated Lavin from any other coach St. John's has had since Lou Carnesseca. He has the passion and brain to help this team and future Johnnies be the best...and beat the best...in the country.

Another Top 10

"You say upset, we say another regular win" is how Sean Evans put it on Friday when asked about beating Pittsburgh and thats what St. Johns did yesterday thanks to the heroic effort by Dwight Hardy in the final seconds of the game.
"He is the Big East Player of the Year in my mind. A run away at this point" said Coach Lavin about Dwight Hardy. He couldn't be any righter.

St. Johns fans go vote for Hardy as Capital One Cup Impact Performance of the Week..he definitely deserves it!

Oh and forgot to mention...ST. JOHNS WILL BE RANKED IN THE TOP 25 FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE NOVEMBER 28, 2000 THIS MONDAY!! WE ARE....ST. JOHNS!!!

St. John's Giant Slayers

Yesterday on ESPN, Stan Verrett called St. Johns the "Giant Slayers" taking note that they have defeated four ranked teams one of which included The Duke Blue Devils. Last night the team traveled over to face Marquette for their second road game in two days, Cincinnati this past Sunday, and did what everyone expected them to do. Win.

The Johnnies or now, Giant Slayers, have proven they can win at home (8-3) they've proven they can win on the road (8-6), they have proven they can win Tournaments (Great Alaskan Shootout, Holiday Festival) and they have proven they can beat ranked opponents (4 wins verse top 25). Key phrase here ladies and gentlemen, THEY HAVE PROVEN.

Here is their resume so far:

Record: 16-9
Strength of Schedule: 2nd (IN THE NATION)
RPI: 17
Key Wins: Duke, UCONN, Georgetown, Notre Dame and Marquette. (I put Marquette as a key win because they are a very tough team, possible tournament bound team and it was on the road).
Key Losses: St. Bonaventure, Fordham.

Joe Lunardi, Mr. Bracketology, has St. Johns as the #7 seed in the tournament.

It's all there for The Johnnies. The numbers, the resume and the attention. The only question left to be answered is, can they finish strong?

Jimmer The Bust?

I was checking out 1st & 10 on ESPN 2 today and the topic of Jimmer Fredette and NBA came about. Skip Bayliss and guest of the day, John Ireland discussed this topic. What blew me away was what John said in his opening comments.

"If Jimmer Fredette was black we wouldn't be having this talk".

That raised a good question to me. Would fans of basketball and analyst say otherwise about Fredette if he were black?

Looking into a league where the majority of white players are from Europe the two note able guys that didn't pan out to the hype were Adam Morrison and J.J. Redick. Both players had tremendous college careers, Morrison at Gonzaga and Redick at Duke, but both never panned out being true TOP 10 picks. Morrison is a complete bust and Redick is a decent role players for the Magic. Will the same bold for Fredette?

I say if Jimmer goes to a team that DOESN'T expect him to carry them he can have quiet the career. I compared him to a Jason Terry type player. The sixth man who doesn't come in to give you defensive minutes but that comes in and sparks a flare for your team when the starters, who you really rely on to win the games, need a rest.

Mock drafts have Fredette as a top 20 pick just weeks after he was at best a second round pick. The kid has the talent to succeed but needs to go to a team that will not rely on him to be their star alone. A veteran team is his best suit. Not a young, up and coming team.

I really would like to hear the peoples opinion on race being a factor for Fredette. I kind of wish it wasn't and more his talent but if it's going to be about that I'd like to hear other peoples thoughts as well.

Comment here or hit me up on Twitter @TimmyD_WSJU.

Landry Fields aka LeeRoy Jenkins

Modell's has started a really fun new thing that involves athletes and their sports. First it was Danny Woodhead trying to get people to buy his jersey and now we've got Landry Fields of the New York Knicks attempting to do the same. This video by the way is historical.

No West Coast Love

So the NBA has announced it's reserves for the All-Star game and can anyone guess the guy who didn't make it?

HINT: He averages 22 points per game and 16 rebounds per game.

Still can't guess? Then here's the answer; Kevin Love.

Sure the guy plays on The Timberwolves but should that be a reason his stats and ability goes unnoticed? 43 double doubles in 48 games. I'm seriously baffled at how he did not make it. Other then Dwight Howard, Love is one of the only true centers left in the game.

I guess this is what happens when basketball becomes a popularity vote.

Check It Out: F.A.M.E.

PRE-PLANNING: Valentine's Day 2011

What's Good?
Since I have been dating my mother always assisted me on how to treat a woman and what she would like to do as far as you courting her. Sometime the magic doesn’t always happen on the first night and although you are filled with lust it is in your best interest to let the night pass. Single awareness day also known as Valentine’s Day comes with a lot of expectations especially as you get older. You are more financially stable to where simple doesn’t always do it…sorry! I hope many of you have an idea for what to do on V-day. Eating is always a major necessity when catering to someone on this day. Whether you are you are a master chef or simply going to a restaurant, ambiance is key. Finding somewhere that is well lit and decorated according to its theme is the best first step to making a good impression. For those that are new to New York or simply trying to find something new, well look no further. I will be giving you some great areas of interest to spend your Valentine’s Day!

First lets Start with some restaurants because that should always be the first destination of the night. I strongly suggest that you call some of these restaurants for your reservation so things go smoothly at the door.
Sushi Samba has one of the most chilled and relaxing environments in New York City when involving dining. The bright colors set a 70's California vibe especially with the music. My experience there was absolutely great along with the service. My Recommendation: The Eel Nigiri as an appetizer and the Chicken Teriyaki ~ Samba Style.
Sushi Samba
87 7th avenue ,
New York, n.y. 10014
212-691-7885
_______________________________________________________
Yama 49 is still one of my favorite spots for dining because of its location and service. The Sushi is always well prepared and the tempura  does wonders. Not to mention the prices are extremely fair. The ambiance gives you a more intimate feeling because of the design and lighting. My Recommendation: King Crab Tempura & Spicy Tuna
Yama 49
308 E 49th St
(between 1st Ave & 2nd Ave)
New York, NY 10017
(212) 355-3370
_________________________________________________________________________
Qi is a high scale Thai restaurant with reasonable prices. Thai food is definitely up and coming because a lot of people are stepping out of their boxes and trying new things. Thai is absolutely incredible and if you haven't tried it yet please drop the McDonald's go live a little. It's located in Union Square where the night can end whenever.
My Recommendation: Sesame Crusted Salmon &Thai Iced Tea
Qi Restaurant
31 W 14th St
New York, NY 10011
(212) 929-9917

Red Rooster  restaurant is for those who cannot deny that soul satisfying southern flavor! The NEW restaurant has been taking guest on a steady basis since their establishment in the heart of Harlem. For all of my Green lovers, here is the spot. My Recommendation: Crab Cakes for your appetizer & The Grilled Snapper Tomato.
Red Rooster
310 Lenox Ave, (Btwn 125th & 126th St)

New York, N.Y. 10027

Celsius Bar and restaurant is the only place to my knowledge with a winter solstice setting. The Restaurant is located in Bryant Park. Being that the restaurant is open seasonally it makes the restaurant that more  special. The restaurant prepares American cuisine, so if you want to play it safe and still get great taste this is your spot. My Recommendations: steamed shrimp dumplings as your appetizer and The Celsius Jumbo Sliders for dinner.
Celsius Bar & Restaurant
Bryant Park (40th Street & 6th ave)
______________________________________________________________
If you are 21 and older then your night can be a little more fun. Finding a great bar with reasonable music and prices is so hard to come by these days. Well, look no further, did you ever think you can get mellow for 8 bucks well; we found a spot for you…
El Cantinero is a very low-key Mexican restaurant and bar  with a dance floor upstairs. This establishment is located in the Union Square area. They have a Margarita selection along with other mixtures that out does Blockheads by far. Each Drink on the menu is four bucks so it’s impossible to lose. I never had a complaint from anyone I brought there to leisurely hang out.
El Cantinero
86 University Pl (Btwn 11th & 12th St)
New York 10003

Chocolate is and will always be a V-Day favorite...
There are many places to get chocolate but nothing say’s "let me put my good foot forward" like Godiva. Godiva has some of the best chocolate selections such as the dipped strawberries, truffles and other assortments. A dozen dipped strawberries would do it though!

Cake has always hit the dead center of anyone’s sweat tooth since its creation. Black Hound’s edible arrangements have just what you are looking for as well. Their chocolate is consumed by the eyes and then by your mouth. Treating both senses the same. The taste and satisfaction has been in business for 13 years so you can imagine how many other people feel the same way.

After everything is set and done, picking an extra curricular activity can vary on how intimate you are with the person. If this person is your spouse well go home and get creative(can’t coach you on this one), if not you can get a little closer with the person by making the last trip a romantic one.  Movies are for teens and easygoing people but if you want to dig a little deeper, one of New York’s most romantic attractions is Ice Skating whether it is Bryant Park or Rockefeller Center. Ice-skating is something different and different is always good. If you are not an avid skater this is a great idea. Taking the Roosevelt Island ferry is one of my favorites. Even though the ride is about ten minutes the scenic setting with city lights and the bridges is an everlasting memory.
